The Media Killed Us
An installation proposal within the theme of “Chaos” that tackles the issue of toxic beauty standards and norms in media and how this can be affected in terms of our self-esteem and mental health.
Throughout the years, women from a young age tend to have this ongoing pressure from the media and society by needing to look perfect or put together. This ongoing pressure stems from the media telling us how we are seen as worthy or belonging based on the beauty standards and norms that the media puts out. For example, commercials that advertise using whitening creams manipulate us into thinking that this whitening cream will be hopes of giving us lighter skin as the more “white you are, the more beautiful you appear to be” by making use of beauty products to fix our problems that do not exist, the normalization of plastic surgery, the desire of having to grow up too fast with young girls using beauty products from a young age when they should be enjoying their childhood and more sensitive topics in terms of mental health such as eating disorders. For me, my call to action for this installation is to help raise awareness of this issue and kill the norm, while also making it engaging, and informative, and also make use of transgressive aesthetics.
