Is It Really "Just a Joke?
TW: MENTIONS OF SEXUAL AND DOMESTIC ABUSE
An infographic highlighting and exploring the normalization of sexist lines and jokes in 90s/2000s TV compared to present-day TV using the field of Visual Infographics and how it still affects women regardless of time.
The Design was based on raging questions about how it was socially acceptable for these sexist jokes and lines to be said in 90s and the early 2000s, how these double standards were seen as the norm, and how it went unnoticed because of how loved the show was. In comparison to right now as it is being noticed more, and even though the norm has changed it still exists regardless of the timing of both for instance the American Sitcom “Friends” (1994-2004) and “The Idol” (2023) it is still ongoing and it helps the rise of what women go through such as sexual and domestic violence.
Regarding the design choices, the visual infographic was designed visually through a website platform in Webflow. I wanted to make the website seem minimalistic but also transgressive as a way of not only making the website showcase facts but also telling a story, thus giving an uncomfortable feeling as a way of saying “How does it make you feel?” by putting the viewers / the intended audience being young men in the shoes of women. For colors, I cared about making it dark but also adding red in the text and headings as a way to give a pop of color and also use it as a way to symbolize blood and violence.
